Recently I was told that I have a 'child like giddiness' when it comes to seasonal foods. I would have to agree. Seasonal foods are those that are only available in your region during certain times of the year. While some growing seasons are long, some of them are really short.
Blueberries are one of those foods that have a relatively short harvest period here in North Carolina. There is something sweet about enjoying foods that can only be found in your local farmer's market or grown in your own backyard. You gain appreciation for the food itself, much like the appreciation for the farmer that grows it. Yesterday I picked up my first pint from local farm, River's Finest, while shopping at the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market and this morning my family is enjoying Blueberry Crumb Muffins. I only make these a few times each year before the blueberries quickly grow themselves out of season.
I try to use blueberries in a variety of recipes while they are available. You don't have to bake them up for them to taste good! In fact, when consumed raw, blueberries pack powerful antioxidants that aid the body in cardiovascular health, memory, eye health, and have potential cancer fighting properties. You will feel good when you toss them in salads, smoothies, parfaits, or eaten raw by the handfuls.
Take some time this weekend to explore a local farmer's market in your area and see what is available. I imagine that you will find it overflowing with flavor!
Here's to eating good in the south!
Disclaimer: As a health coach it is my goal to help people define their goals for a healthy lifestyle. With all things, I believe that foods such as the blueberry crumb muffin can be enjoyed in moderation without derailing a person's aspirations for complete wellness. When enjoying foods that tend to be off the radar when it comes to nutrition, I prefer to make them at home so I know the quality and quantity of the ingredients used. A fresh blueberry crumb muffin in combination with a healthy lifestyle is a sweet way to celebrate foods that are only available once a year!
