When I think about the weekend, I think about going to bed early on Friday night and waking up early Saturday morning for a trip to the farmer's market. Lately I have been making it a habit to arrive before the market opens for a morning run downtown. I love the change of scenery that this offers and the boost of endorphins makes for even better shopping!
I have been shopping locally and seasonally at the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market for almost 20 years. I have come to know when the field tomatoes replace the hot house tomatoes, that fresh potatoes and onions are nature's perfect marriage, and as soon as strawberry season ends so begins blueberry season. There is something special about summers in the south and the wonderful variety of flavors it offers.
But then there is the Saturday that I walk down a familiar aisle and find myself in awe at the sight of fresh radicchio that is simply displayed on the table of Handance Farm. The stark red leaves against a bed of greens is hard to ignore. The health benefits of radicchio are spectacular enough to pull me in like a magnet.
Radicchio is high in vitamins B, C, & K, antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, and phytonutrients lycopene and quercetin. It is also high in fiber, promotes a healthy gut, as well as promote collagen production!! You can read more about the health benefits of radicchio on Dr. Mercola's website, a well known osteopathic physician.
Though some foods at the farmers market are seasonally predictable, there are some that come as a culinary surprise and can change the scenery of any well planned menu. Thanks to so many hard working farmers, I plan on cooking, eating, and running well all week!
